The saga to find a photo tag/search tool
Terminology:
All of these terms have very specific meanings. Some confusion can occur, as
some systems use the terms in an interchangeable fashion, or (in my case) users
assume the terms really mean the same thing.
- Common terms you should get a feel for:
- Ingest - process of downloading (or uploading depending on your viewpoint of preferred language) photos from camera to computer
- workflow - entire process that you use (yes you should) to manage your photos

- data - you know information
- metadata - summary information about your data
- tags - common name for metadata
- rating - a specific type of metadata/tag used to show how important an item is to you
- Labels - a specific type of metadata/tag used to group items for different purposes.
- Industry buzz words and my off the cuff descriptions
- Records management - generaly specific to registry and filing systems, often just managing title subject location information.

- DAM = Digital Asset management - specificaly referrring to electronic content
- Document management - may be electronic or paper, or photo, or movie ....
- Knowledge management - about getting useful information from the content

- Taxonomy
- folksonomy
- entology
There are links on the Info Sources page to provide more background.
However be aware that in many cases there are no commonly used terms,
except in the case of those used by librarians,
which do realy need more discipline to use, and the expertise to use them!
